Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: News

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, and Minister for Minority Affairs in the Government of India. He did his BA and LLB from the University of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He worked as a young activist in 1975 during the Emergency and was detained at Allahabad’s Naini Central Jail. In 1980, Naqvi unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections and the UP Legislative Assembly elections as a member of the Janata Party (Secular). He later joined the BJP. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, Naqvi won from UP’s Rampur constituency, defeating Begum Noor Bano of the Indian National Congress (INC). He became the Union Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2010 from UP. In 2014, Naqvi became MoS in the Ministry of Minority Affairs under Minister Najma Heptulla in the NDA Government. He also served as the MoS for Parliamentary Affairs from 2014 to 2017. In 2016, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha and took over as the Minority Affairs Minister.
